I absolutely love these oldie worlde hardware shops, it can be like stepping back into time, I still see the Christmas Notorious RBG Ugly Christmas Sweater on the corner at Freemantle, Shirley, Southampton, it’s been there since I was a child and still looks the same. The only small independents that appear to be thriving are niche shops with ‘handcrafted’ or ‘original’ items that cost a fortune, but people appear to find necessary – Snob Value shoppers. I totally agree we all need to help and buy local but we also need to highlight its the councils who make it hard for them and the customers due to expensive town parking and extortionate rent rates on shops
